Description
Dog rose, Rosa canina, must be the most prolific rose in the country. It is in hedges and gardens everywhere and is very easily spread due to birds and some fruit loving animals devouring the red hips. It can grow to 5 metres high on its own but even higher if it can catch onto a taller tree. The scent of the pale pink flowers is very special, even the leaves when crushed have a lovely scent. The blooms last two months usually June and July. Dog rose will grow well in all types of soil it is even happy in heavy clay but it doesn’t like wet soil or soil that easily dries out. After reading about this simple country rose I have realised how famous it is. I have worked around it on our farm and never given it a second thought. Records show this rose was extremely well thought of seven hundred years ago, probably because of its range of culinary uses. I have never knowingly eaten food with it in but I’m not sure I want to! Dog Rose is ideal for any size of garden in any type of soil.
