Description
Hornbeam , Carpinus betulus, is normally grown as a garden hedge but grown on its own it will mature into a beautiful tree. It could reach 15 to 20 metres high. It is slow growing and has distinctive deep veins in the leaves, which are quite tough to touch and I think have a slight velvety feel. During the Winter the leaves hang onto the twigs right through to the spring, although they will have turned brown. When grown as a hedge, the hedge makes a very good wind break and also can be grown high to make a private garden. The mature plant will produce flowers then seeds which many birds love to devour.
