Field Maple, Acer campestre, is not a true hedge row plant, in my opinion, but it does add variety to a hedge and certainly improves the look of any garden or field hedge. It has very pretty dark green leaves unmistakably as a Maple. Planted as a hedge on its own it would not hold back stock , so it does require mixing in with other hedging species such as Blackthorn or Hawthorn. Unless the hedge is allowed to grow out for several years it will not achieve its full potential for wildlife. For humans and animals to get the full value from a Field Maple tree it should be grown as an individual tree.
As a hedging plant it will suit any sized garden but as a tree it does require a medium to large sized garden as it will reach 15 to 20 metres in height. As a mature tree it is second to none, the dome of the canopy is simply beautiful. Sheep love to shelter from the sunshine under them.
It will grow in all types of soil.
