Description
Common Pear, Pyrus communis, is one of the original varieties of pear. I understand that it’s likely that more than half of the cultivars of pear originate from Pyrus communis. It is one of the most important species in the region and has a known history of over one thousand years. I have read that the fruit should be picked when mature but before it ripens. It can be stored in the cold and brought into ambient temperature to ripen. The juice from this pear can be fermented from which the drink known as Perry is made. The tree can grow to around 15 metres and can live for over two hundred years. Environmentally, caterpillars live in the foliage which are food for many small birds, those that survive fly away as butterflies and moths. Bees also feed on the beautiful white blossom in the Spring. The wood from the pear tree is highly valued for woodwind musical instruments and also for kitchen utensils as it does not splinter or warp. The oval shaped glossy green leaves are very attractive, they turn golden in the Autumn then black later. It will grow well in most types of soil and is best grown in a medium or large garden.
