Description
Blackthorn, Prunus spinosa, is deciduous and is possibly the most effective species planted as a hedge for keeping animals from escaping, Its very strong thorns will create an inaccessible barrier around any boundary. It is capable of growing to several metres high and soon thickness out at its base. Blackthorn is one of the earliest flowering bushes in the Spring, it can produce black berries in the Autumn which have many uses in the culinary world. These berries are called Sloes and are also used to flavour gin. I am told that a Blackthorn hedge is not ideal where horses are kept, I presume due to the sharp thorns, the thorns do not harm farm animals in my experience. Blackthorn will grow in any soil type.
