Description
Cherry Plum – Prunus cerasifera, is probably the first tree to produce blossom in the Spring. It can sometimes appear before the leaves, and is white to pale pink. I recently noticed a self set tree that appeared in our farmyard hedge, I hadn’t seen it until the fruit ripened, but then I certainly did! The fruit is a lot sweeter than other hedge row plums. Some of the plants have purple leaves which make them very attractive as a garden tree. The fruit from these plants usually has a dark purple skin with orange to red flesh. Cherry Plum is ideal for a medium to large garden as a tree standing on its own, or planted in a hedge row giving interest all year round. It will grow in any type of soil. Cherry Plum can reach about twenty feet high but it can be kept shorter by pruning in the autumn.
