Description
Cherry Plum, Prunus cerasifera, is a deciduous tree and can be found in many old hedge rows in the countryside especially if the hedges have been allowed to grow up. The fruit can be a superb red or yellow colour. A ripe Cherry plum equals any plum, domestic or otherwise, for taste. I make a point of collecting them in the summer and after de-stoning and cooking slightly with a drop of water, I freeze them to use in the winter. The tree will grow to 10m but I think it could be pruned back in order to live in either a small or large garden. With care it should be possible to let a few shoots grow up to produce its very early, beautiful, blossom and afterwards its very early fruit. It is popular anywhere and will grow in most soil types.
