Description
Guelder Rose, Viburnum opulus, is a deciduous shrub. We have some growing in our woodland and it is very worthy of its place. The leaves are uniquely shaped and are a lovely light green colour. In the spring it produces a wonderful array of blossoms, usually a brilliant white. Deep red berries soon appear and will stay from late summer, right through the winter, well after the leaves have gone. The birds don’t seem to take the now very ripe berries until everything else has gone. The flesh of the berries is an acquired smell and probably taste, but don’t let that put you off having a bush or a few in a hedge row, they create an interesting variation, I think it is a great little shrub. It is suitable for medium sized or large gardens, as individual bushes or part of a mixed hedgerow.
Guelder rose will grow well in most soil types and doesn’t mind damp soil conditions.
