Description
Hawthorn, Crataegus monogyna, this deciduous plant is used mainly for hedging. It will grow in most types of soil and the thorns, unlike some plants, will not harm farm animals or horses. The plants, when allowed to grow freely, can be layered to help create a stock proof hedge. Ideally, it is best to trim the hedge when established no more than once every three years to allow the marvelous May blossom to develop. I would suggest a policy of only trimming a third of the hedge each year, allowing the environment to benefit from part of the hedge flowering and producing berries annually. Hawthorn works really well with a small percentage of other hedging species to create a natural country hedge. It is equally satisfying to plant hawthorn as an individual tree, in time producing a superb small tree for any size of garden.
