Description
Lawsons cypress, Chamaecyparis lawsoniana, is an evergreen cedar, a species of conifer. I think this species does not get the credit it deserves regarding its beauty as a mature tree, especially if it is grown in a prominent position on its own. It can grow to forty metres high with a beautiful doom shaped top. It produces crimson male flowers on the twig ends and female flowers which are blue. Due to the density of the foliage, and of course it’s all year round availability, nesting birds such as various finches rely on it. The timber has a commercial value and has many uses. I think that this beautiful species of conifer quite understandably gets mistaken for Cupressus leylandii, leyland cypress, which is a great species but in my opinion best for a totally different use.
Lawsons cypress also makes an excellent hedge and does not grow as fast as leylandii, therefore if a year is missed for trimming it does not really matter! It can be grown as a hedge in any sized garden but needs a medium to large garden to be grown as an individual tree. It will grow well in most soil types and does well in moist soil.
