Description

Wild Service – Chequers Tree, Sorbus torminalis, is a deciduous tree that will grow to about 15m. The wood is very valuable due to its fine grain and strength. It was used to make screws for wine presses in the past! Musical instruments and billiard cues have also been made from the wood. It requires a medium to large garden or parkland to grow in. It is rare to find one and usually these days they can only be found in an ancient woodland or occasionally in hedgerows. Ecologically the fruit is important for birds and mammals. It will grow in any soil types, but does like clay or lime soil best.
